[00:12.48]People had gathered in Nice for a celebration of Bastille Day. [00:18.44]Nice is the fifth-largest city in France. [00:22.76]It is a port city about 30 kilometers from the Italian border. [00:29.32]About 350,000 people live there. [00:34.28]The driver was shot and killed. [00:36.91]Police identified him as a 31-year-old French-Tunisian who lived in Nice. [00:45.36]Police said he was known as a violent person and longtime criminal. [00:52.72]But security forces did not suspect him of having links to terrorist groups. [01:00.28]The driver entered a street that was closed to traffic at the time. [01:07.00]He crashed through a barrier, then drove through the crowd for up to two kilometers, [01:14.48]speeding up and targeting people as they tried to flee. [01:20.96]French President Francois Hollande spoke to the nation early Friday. [01:27.08]He said "nothing will make us give way in the fight against terrorism." [01:34.12]He talked about the terrorist attacks in Paris last November. [01:39.56]He said all of France is being threatened by the Islamic State terrorist group. [01:46.88]Hollande extended the country's state of emergency [01:52.20]-- which was to end later this month -- for three months. [01:57.40]He has also ordered 10,000 members of the military [02:02.60]to help security forces throughout the country. [02:06.96]And he said France will increase its roles in Syria and Iraq. [02:13.82]This is the third large attack in France since last year. [02:20.36]An attack in Paris in November killed at least 130 people [02:26.56]and a series of attacks in January 2015 [02:32.20]that began with an assault on the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo killed 17 people.
