[ti:Australia to Build Super Telescope+++澳大利亚打造超级望远镜] [by:www.21voa.com] [00:00.00]更多听力请访问21VOA.COM [00:00.00]Australian scientists are leading an international project [00:04.57]to build an extremely powerful ground-based telescope. [00:10.12]The scientists say the machine will provide a deeper and clearer look [00:16.83]into space than the Hubble Space Telescope. [00:20.73]The telescope's short name is MAVIS. [00:25.63]That stands for Multi-conjugate-adaptive-optics Assisted Visible Imager and Spectrograph. [00:34.69]It is designed to correct a problem common to Earth based telescopes: [00:41.83]image blurring caused by atmospheric conditions. [00:46.86]Scientists in Australia say the new technology [00:52.09]will help them explore how the first stars formed 13 billion years ago. [00:58.55]The telescope will also examine changes in the weather [01:03.81]on planets and moons in our solar system. [01:08.19]Images produced by MAVIS are expected to be three times [01:13.90]clearer than the Hubble Space Telescope. [01:17.53]Launched in 1990, Hubble orbits Earth from about 550 kilometers away, [01:25.55]well outside the planet's atmosphere. [01:29.93]Richard McDermid of Macquarie University in Sydney says [01:34.54]the new telescope will change the way we explore space. [01:39.54]He said the telescope will permit scientists "to push into a new frontier [01:46.42]of the furthest and faintest things we can see." [01:51.07]The new view will include the universe's earliest galaxies. [01:57.61]This also means an exploration of the past, McDermid explained, [02:03.39]"because when we look far away in astronomy we are also looking far back in time [02:09.36]because it takes time for the light to reach us." [02:13.58]The telescope will be placed in Chile and run by the European Southern Observatory, [02:20.79]a research organization based in Germany. [02:25.17]It is expected to take seven years to build and cost $44 million. [02:33.71]The MAVIS team is led by The Australian National University. [02:38.73]The team also includes scientists from Macquarie University, [02:44.51]Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics and France's Laboratoire d'Astrophysique.
