[00:13.32]The project used augmented reality [00:17.24]to recreate temples and competition areas [00:22.12]in the ancient city of Olympia. [00:26.72]It was recently launched in the city, [00:29.76]one of the world's major archaeological sites. [00:34.24]Augmented reality, or AR, is a technology [00:40.36]that can project computer-created imagery [00:44.60]onto special eyeglasses. [00:47.32]Through the eyeglasses, the images appear [00:51.56]along with other physical objects in the environment. [00:56.88]The project is a partnership [00:59.80]between American software maker Microsoft [01:04.12]and Greece's Ministry of Culture and Sport. [01:08.84]The ministry helped Microsoft [01:12.04]map and build virtual representations of Olympia. [01:18.12]The city was used for nearly a thousand years [01:23.20]to host the games in ancient Greece [01:26.96]that served as the model for the modern Olympics. [01:31.60]"It's a milestone ... that helped us bring technology [01:36.72]and culture and history together so we can preserve it," [01:41.96]Microsoft President Brad Smith [01:45.48]said in a video message at the launch event. [01:50.52]The experience provides users the chance [01:54.52]to virtually walk through the ruins of Olympia. [02:00.12]At the Olympic Museum in Athens, [02:03.36]people can also use Microsoft's AR headsets [02:08.48]for a similar experience. [02:11.04]Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis [02:16.04]joined a group of schoolchildren [02:19.00]who were using the app for the first time. [02:22.72]"I'm absolutely thrilled that we're able to present to the world [02:28.48]a completely new cultural experience using technology [02:33.88]to re-create the ancient world of Olympia," [02:37.88]Mitsotakis told The Associated Press. [02:43.04]Students from a local middle school looked at statues [02:47.72]and structures that were brought to life on their phones. [02:52.36]They were able to virtually visit inside and outside settings [02:58.60]to explore where ancient Olympians [03:01.80]had competed in different sports. [03:05.04]One of the children, Panagiotis Christopoulos, [03:09.96]called the project "impressive." [03:13.44]"I think it can help with teaching in schools," the student said. [03:19.68]The project began 18 months ago [03:23.56]with a series of imaging flights [03:26.52]to help map areas across Olympia. [03:30.20]Microsoft is to build several data centers [03:34.96]in and near Athens as part of a $1 billion investment agreement [03:41.84]with the Greek government. [03:44.12]I'm Bryan Lynn.
