[00:07.96]And now, Words and Their Stories,
[00:11.16]from VOA Learning English.
[00:19.20]During a new year,
[00:20.60]many of us decide to try something new.
[00:24.92]With a new year's resolution,
[00:27.36]we resolve to do something
[00:29.40]we have not done in the past.
[00:32.48]Sometimes new things are risk-free
[00:35.84]– like eating healthier food
[00:38.20]or getting more exercise.
[00:41.84]Sometimes we decide to learn a new skill,
[00:45.68]like a language or a musical instrument.
[00:50.20]Again, these things are not risky,
[00:53.80]nor do they have bad consequences.
[00:58.28]If you do not learn how to play the guitar,
[01:01.28]nothing bad will happen — probably.
[01:06.52]However, sometimes we need
[01:08.92]to shake up our lives and do something different
[01:12.60]that does have consequences.
[01:16.52]That means there are risks
[01:18.44]if things do not work out.
[01:22.16]Such a change could involve
[01:24.08]moving to a new city,
[01:26.20]starting a new job,
[01:28.04]or ending a relationship.
[01:31.68]These new things do have a level of risk .
[01:35.96]Things could go wrong.
[01:38.56]On the other hand, things could go very right.
[01:42.40]So, for these situations,
[01:45.64]we introduce two expressions
[01:47.92]that encourage you to take a chance.
[01:52.04]The first expression is
[01:54.28]nothing ventured, nothing gained.
[01:58.20]This means that without
[01:59.96]doing something risky or difficult,
[02:02.76]a bad situation will not improve.
[02:07.28]You could also sum it up this way:
[02:10.48]If you try something risky, you could fail.
[02:14.52]But if you do not try at all
[02:17.64]... you will surely fail.
[02:20.76]The word "venture" can be both
[02:22.80]a noun and a verb.
[02:25.56]As a verb, it means to proceed
[02:27.96]in a dangerous or risky plan.
[02:31.36]As a noun, it means an action
[02:34.24]that involves chance, risk, or danger.
[02:38.92]For example, starting a new restaurant
[02:41.84]is a risky business venture these days.
[02:44.96]And venturing into an unknown area
[02:48.48]could be dangerous.
[02:51.32]A friend of mine wanted to learn
[02:53.16]how to drive a stunt car
[02:55.32]and then move to Los Angeles
[02:57.84]to become a stunt car driver.
[03:01.44]A stunt car is a vehicle used in the movies
[03:04.60]to perform crashes and wild driving.
[03:09.08]There are not many women in this profession.
[03:12.12]So, I told her that her decision
[03:15.32]involved lots of risk.
[03:17.96]She said to me: "Well,
[03:20.36]nothing ventured, nothing gained."
[03:24.24]Our second expression is
[03:26.68]fortune favors the bold.
[03:30.12]"Fortune" usually means wealth or fame.
[03:33.24]But it can also mean being in a good situation.
[03:38.88]And, if you are bold, you are brave.
[03:42.56]So, this expression means
[03:45.12]that people who are brave
[03:47.04]and take chances help themselves.
[03:51.16]Their bold, brave actions
[03:53.12]put them in a good place.
[03:56.68]When using this expression, keep this in mind.
[04:00.20]The person who finds a fortune
[04:02.80]has done something to get it.
[04:05.00]It just doesn't happen to them by chance.
[04:09.16]So, if someone happens to win
[04:11.92]a lot of money in a lottery,
[04:14.64]you wouldn't use the expression
[04:17.12]fortune favors the bold.
[04:20.08]However, let's say you quit your job
[04:22.88]and moved to a new city.
[04:24.84]That is a bold decision.
[04:27.88]But you are sure that it will be good for you.
[04:31.84]In the new city, you find your dream job.
[04:36.24]It might even pay more money
[04:38.24]than your old job.
[04:40.04]Here, you could definitely say,
[04:43.00]"Fortune favors the bold!"
[04:46.28]And that's all the time we have
[04:48.24]for this Words and Their Stories.
[04:50.48]For the start of 2023,
[04:53.12]I wish you and yours health and wealth.
[04:56.76]Until next time ... I'm Anna Matteo.

END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
