[00:00.12]In the United States, a company is working on a project [00:04.20]that could change the way we think about public transportation. [00:09.12]Its planned system would move people around in steel tubes. [00:14.72]Those passengers would be traveling at speeds [00:17.84]of up to 1,200 kilometers per hour. [00:22.76]The futuristic steel tube transportation system is called Hyperloop. [00:28.84]Workers plan to test the system next year [00:33.12]in a specially built community called Quay Valley. [00:37.24]The town will be powered entirely by energy from the sun. [00:41.90]The Hyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. [00:49.08]Dirk Ahlborn is head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. [00:54.48]He says his company has taken Mr. Musk's idea [00:58.80]and is developing a system that will be safe, [01:02.16]environmentally friendly and fast. [01:05.64]"It's 100 percent solar powered...we're not going to get up to 760 miles per hour, [01:10.14]but we believe we can actually break the records that are existing right now." [01:14.72]This means that a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, California [01:19.44]to Las Vegas, Nevada, could someday take only 30 minutes by Hyperloop. [01:26.12]The system involves a series of capsules that float inside a long tube. [01:32.40]These containers would not need to travel along a pathway or track. [01:37.52]The system has been designed to operate above or below ground. [01:42.88]"Inside the tube you create a low pressure environment very similar to an airplane that's at high altitudes. [01:48.73]So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn't encounter as much resistance, [01:53.15]and therefore can travel really fast with very little energy." [01:57.08]Dick Ahlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley to find the best way [02:04.32]to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. [02:08.80]A larger system will cost an estimated six to $10 billion to build. [02:15.40]If Mr. Ahlborn and his company succeed, [02:18.28]we may one day see these very fast Hyperloop capsules [02:22.91]speeding through tubes around the world. [02:26.24]I'm Jonathan Evans.
