[00:00.72]Donald Trump called for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
[00:09.08]to resign, after her critical comments about him.
[00:15.20]In interviews with the Associated Press, the New York Times and CNN,
[00:23.16]Ginsburg spoke about Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.
[00:30.24]Ginsburg told the Associated Press
[00:34.20]she did not want to think about the possibility of Trump winning the election.
[00:41.68]She added with a smile, "It's likely that the next president,
[00:47.64]whoever she will be, will have a few appointments to make."
[00:54.00]Hillary Clinton is the likely Democratic nominee.
[00:59.68]She will likely run against Trump.
[01:03.52]In the New York Times interview, published on July 10, Ginsburg said,
[01:10.12]"I can't imagine what our country would be with Donald Trump as our president."
[01:17.16]She also joked about moving to New Zealand.
[01:21.72]In a follow-up interview on Monday with CNN,
[01:26.36]Ginsburg called Trump "a faker" who has "no consistency about him."
[01:34.32]Ginsburg also criticized Trump for not making his recent tax returns public.
[01:42.64]Most candidates running for president do this.
[01:46.98]Traditionally, Supreme Court justices like Ginsburg do not comment on presidential candidates.
[01:56.05]They keep their feelings about the candidates to themselves.
[02:01.05]One of the reasons is that the Supreme Court is sometimes called upon to help decide an election.

[02:13.32]when the results of the election between Al Gore and George W. Bush were not clear.
[02:21.16]In response to Ginsburg's comments,
[02:24.16]Trump said the justice, who is 83, should resign from her position.
[02:31.12]Ginsburg is the oldest justice currently serving on the highest court in the U.S.
[02:38.80]Trump used Twitter to say her comments about him
[02:43.40]were "dumb," and "Her mind is shot – resign!"
[02:48.99]Other Republicans were also critical of Ginsburg.
[02:54.40]Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said her comment "shows bias."
[03:01.44]And Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said
[03:06.52]it was "totally inappropriate" for Ginsburg to criticize Trump.
[03:12.44]Bernie Sanders, a Democratic candidate for president,
[03:16.76]said he agreed with Ginsburg's comments about Trump.
[03:21.76]But the senator from Vermont declined to say whether they were appropriate.
[03:27.60]On Wednesday, the New York Times editorial board
[03:32.00]wrote a column saying it agreed with Trump.
[03:36.40]The newspaper said it is "vital that the court remain outside the presidential process."
[03:45.72]The Washington Post agreed with her comments,
[03:50.16]but said it would be better if a Supreme Court justice
[03:55.00]kept her thoughts about the election private.
[03:58.88]Ginsburg has served on the Supreme Court since 1993.
[04:04.48]President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, appointed Ginsburg.
[04:09.20]At the time, she was the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court.
[04:15.31]Ginsburg has also criticized the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate
[04:20.84]for not acting on President Barack Obama's nomination of judge Merrick Garland.
[04:27.72]Right now, the court only has eight justices, instead of nine.
[04:33.40]Justice Antonin Scalia died earlier this year.
