[00:08.85]And he was investigated by the country's intelligence agency MI-5 [00:15.17]"in relation to concerns about violent extremism." [00:20.16]May added that there was no earlier information on the suspect's plan [00:26.40]or his reason for carrying out the attack. [00:30.61]Investigators believe that the attacker was influenced by "Islamist ideology." [00:38.50]Shortly after May spoke with members of the parliament, [00:42.91]the Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility [00:46.41]saying the attacker was a "soldier of Islamic State." [00:51.98]On Wednesday, the attacker crashed an SUV into pedestrians near the Parliament building. [01:00.29]The large vehicle killed two persons and injured many others. [01:06.69]The attacker then stabbed a police officer to death [01:10.53]before being fatally shot by another officer. [01:14.81]The attack injured about 40 people, including visitors from South Korea, [01:21.05]China, Germany, France, Romania, Greece, Ireland, Italy and the United States. [01:29.91]Twenty-nine people have been hospitalized. [01:33.51]Seven are in critical, or extremely serious, condition. [01:39.44]British police have arrested eight people in connection with the attack. [01:45.29]The arrests were carried out in London, Birmingham and other parts of the country. [01:52.69]Mark Rowley is deputy commissioner for London's Metropolitan Police Service. [02:00.11]Rowley did not say how those arrested were linked to Wednesday's attack. [02:06.45]He said the "attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism." [02:13.64]As the British Parliament reopened for its normal meetings Thursday, [02:19.41]May told lawmakers that it "was an attack on free people everywhere." [02:25.55]"Yesterday an act of terrorism tried to silence our democracy, [02:31.92]but today we meet as normal, as generations have done before us [02:36.68]and as future generations will continue to do, to deliver a simple message: [02:42.53]We are not afraid and our resolve will never waver in the face of terrorism," she said. [02:48.93]In Washington, the White House said President Donald Trump [02:55.36]spoke with Prime Minister May and was briefed on the attack. [03:00.00]Just days earlier, the United States and Great Britain banned larger electronic devices [03:08.02]on direct flights from several nations in the Middle East and North Africa. [03:14.01]Officials said that unspecified threats were the reason. [03:19.44]I'm Jonathan Evans. 更多听力请访问21VOA.COM
