[00:00.00]The Kansas City Chiefs needed extra time on Sunday
[00:03.79]to win the American football championship called the Super Bowl.
[00:08.88]The Super Bowl is the National Football League's championship game.
[00:13.70]Football experts say the Kansas City Chiefs
[00:17.08]are now one of the best teams to have ever played the sport.
[00:21.88]The Chiefs scored a touchdown late in the extra period
[00:26.92]to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25 to 22.
[00:32.63]The team has now won three Super Bowls in five seasons
[00:36.89]and appeared in four of the championship games since 2020.
[00:42.86]Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback
[00:46.29]and the team's most important player.
[00:49.06]He has won three Super Bowls.
[00:51.57]Only three other quarterbacks have won more championships.

[00:58.39]He was voted the top player, or MVP, of the game.

[01:07.11]Kansas City's win was only part of the story in Las Vegas, Nevada.
[01:12.67]For a while, it seemed as if the halftime show,
[01:16.98]featuring the music performer Usher,
[01:20.80]was going to be the most exciting part of the game.
[01:24.57]At that point, San Francisco was ahead 10 to 3.
[01:29.71]Usher, a singer who became well-known about 20 years ago,
[01:35.99]came out in sparkling, white clothes and performed
[01:41.08]along with a marching band and other musicians.
[01:45.00]He was joined during his show by Alicia Keys,
[01:48.66]H.E.R., Jermaine Dupri, Lil' Jon and Ludacris.
[01:54.09]Usher performed parts of 12 of his most popular songs.
[01:59.48]Throughout the game, cameras cut
[02:03.32]to another famous singer, Taylor Swift.
[02:06.70]Swift is the girlfriend of Travis Kelce,
[02:10.30]one of the Kansas City players.
[02:12.85]Swift performed the last of four concerts in Japan on Saturday
[02:18.87]and flew to Las Vegas to attend Sunday's game.
[02:23.33]Kansas City, in the central state of Missouri,
[02:26.80]will celebrate the Chiefs during a parade on Wednesday.
[02:31.49]The game changed at the start of the fourth quarter,
[02:35.84]when San Francisco scored a touchdown to take a 16 to 13 lead.
[02:41.77]However, the 49ers kicker, Jake Moody,
[02:45.92]had his extra point attempt blocked.
[02:48.98]The failed play permitted Kansas City to kick a field goal,
[02:53.64]worth three points, to tie the game at 16
[02:58.24]and then again at 19 in order to force overtime.
[03:03.84]It was only the second Super Bowl to require extra time.
[03:07.76]In the overtime period, San Francisco only scored a field goal
[03:13.11]to take the lead 22 to 19.
[03:16.79]However, under NFL rules, both teams
[03:20.93]have at least one chance to score in extra time.
[03:25.27]That meant Kansas City could win the game with a touchdown.
[03:29.28]That is exactly what happened,
[03:31.95]when Mahomes threw a short touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman
[03:37.00]to end the game with only six seconds remaining.
[03:42.63]Kelce is one of the league's best players at his position.
[03:48.17]He had a slow start but caught nine passes from Mahomes.
[03:52.87]Swift joined Kelce for the Super Bowl celebration after the game.
[03:58.83]After getting a kiss from Swift, Kelce said "the goal
[04:03.61]has always been to get three (Super Bowls)."
[04:06.67]He went on to say the team wants to win again next year,
[04:10.01]to make it three in a row.
[04:12.49]The Chiefs are the first team
[04:15.90]to win two Super Bowls one after the other,
[04:19.12]since the New England Patriots did it 19 years ago.
[04:23.44]Mahomes said, "I'm proud of the guys"
[04:26.48]as he accepted his MVP award.
