[00:03.72]The longest lunar eclipse of the century will happen late Friday [00:09.44]or early Saturday, depending on where you live. [00:14.52]The American space agency NASA [00:17.60]says the moon will move into the Earth's shadow on Friday night. [00:23.24]For four hours, it will be partly in the Earth's shadow. [00:28.00]The total eclipse will last 1 hour 42 minutes and 57 seconds. [00:37.24]The eclipse will be visible to people in Europe, Africa [00:42.12]and the Middle East on July 27 between sunset and midnight. [00:49.76]Those who live in Asia and Australia will be able to see the eclipse [00:55.36]between midnight and sunrise on July 28. [01:01.08]The eclipse will turn the light color of the moon to deep red. [01:06.96]Scientists call this kind of moon a "blood moon." [01:12.36]Andrew Fabian is with the University of Cambridge. [01:17.04]He spoke with the Reuters news agency. [01:20.80]"It's called a blood moon because the light from the sun [01:25.06]goes through the Earth's atmosphere on its way to the moon [01:30.40]and the Earth's atmosphere turns it red in the same way [01:35.60]that when the sun goes down, it goes red." [01:39.58]Unlike a solar eclipse, [01:42.00]people can look at a lunar eclipse directly with their own eyes. [01:48.12]On the same day as the eclipse, [01:50.88]the planet Mars will be at its brightest as it travels close to Earth. [01:57.92]The eclipse, however, will not be visible from North America or most of the Pacific. [02:05.80]The next lunar eclipse of such length will happen in 2123.
