[00:05.85]to receive Michelin Guide's highest honor of three stars.
[00:12.88]The French-born chef was recognized Thursday 
[00:18.48]when Michelin published its yearly rating 
[00:21.94]of top restaurants in the San Francisco area.
[00:27.23]Her restaurant, Atelier Crenn, has been praised for its creative
[00:34.36]and artistic offerings since it opened in 2011.
[00:40.37]A year ago, Michelin gave Atelier Crenn a two-star rating. 
[00:47.97]Its rise to three stars was unanimous among the travel guide's food critics. 
[00:56.26]They praised the restaurant for its "top-quality experience," 
[01:02.90]noted Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guide's international director.
[01:10.68]Crenn's food, he said, shows a "wonderful balance of...artistry,
[01:17.36]technical ability and taste."
[01:21.20]Crenn is a small eatery with only eight tables. 
[01:26.93]It offers a tasting menu for $335.

[01:42.46]The other chefs are Carme Ruscalleda in Spain, 
[01:47.87]Anne-Sophie Pic in France, Nadia Santini in Italy and Clare Smyth in Britain.
[01:57.63]Atelier Crenn and Single Thread are the only three-star restaurants
[02:03.99]in the San Francisco Bay area.
[02:07.22]They join six other businesses on the guidebook's list
[02:12.98]of top Bay-area restaurants for 2019. 
[02:18.27]Their food is "worth a special journey," Michelin said.
[02:23.63]The latest San Francisco guidebook will go on sale on December 4.
[02:31.48]For the second time in two years, San Francisco 
[02:36.82]and the nearby wine-producing areas of Napa and Sonoma 
[02:42.56]have more three-star restaurants than New York City, which has five.
[02:48.60]New York still has a lot of top restaurants, said Poullennec. 
[02:55.17]She added there are more restaurants there with one, 
[02:59.65]two or three Michelin stars than in San Francisco.
[03:04.15]Michelin Guide awarded stars to 76 New York restaurants 
[03:10.82]earlier this month, compared with 57 in the San Francisco area.
[03:17.16]The identity of Michelin's food critics is always kept secret. 
[03:23.56]A restaurant must be visited by several critics 
[03:27.77]before it is recognized with any stars.
[03:31.46]The Michelin Guide began in France in the early 20th century 
[03:37.54]for drivers who needed places to stop.
