[00:00.04]Mayra is a 17-year-old migrant from Guatemala
[00:05.08]who recently crossed the Rio Grande River
[00:08.20]with her small child Marvin on her back.
[00:12.64]The river marks the border between the U.S. state of Texas and Mexico.
[00:19.12]Mayra had joined a group of about 70 migrants
[00:23.16]that crossed the river in the dark on small rafts.
[00:27.64]The group was mostly Guatemalan
[00:29.76]and Honduran women with young children
[00:32.60]and about 25 teenagers traveling alone.
[00:36.88]Mayra hoped that, as a teenaged mother,
[00:40.20]she would be permitted to stay in the United States.
[00:44.52]The group is among the thousands of migrants
[00:47.32]who have been crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in recent weeks.
[00:52.76]The administration of President Joe Biden
[00:55.68]is trying to put the migrants in government housing
[00:58.88]during the coronavirus health crisis.
[01:02.76]A top Biden administration official said
[01:06.08]the number of migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border
[01:10.16]in 2021 is expected to be the highest in 20 years.
[01:16.40]At least 9,200 children, who had arrived without adults,
[01:21.56]are in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
[01:26.32]That government agency deals with migrant children.
[01:30.12]Mayra’s group arrived in Penitas, Texas after crossing the river.
[01:36.12]The teens and parents then made the final part of their trip:
[01:40.04]walking to the U.S. border wall.
[01:43.56]There, they waited for U.S. border officers to take them into custody.
[01:49.08]Mayra went down a dirt road in between cotton fields
[01:53.04]on the way to the tall metal wall.
[01:56.32]Her baby was tired and crying.
[01:59.20]“I heard on the news that mothers with their babies
[02:03.88]and minors could come,” she said.
[02:08.00]When a neighbor offered to help pay for her trip,
[02:11.00]she felt like she had no choice.
[02:14.28]Her father was dead.
[02:16.40]Her mother’s health was getting worse.
[02:20.00]She was earning $5 a day planting corn.
[02:23.44]She sometimes took extra work washing clothes.
[02:28.60]Marvin’s father had disappeared.
[02:31.20]He left us, she said while crying. “We have nothing.”
[02:36.88]The group spent the final night of their trip
[02:39.72]on the floor of an empty building on a farm near the river.
[02:44.28]“We slept like animals,” one young mother said.
[02:48.32]People in the group said word is spreading in Central America
[02:54.80]that people aged 17 and under
[02:58.36]and mothers of young children can enter the country.
[03:04.44]These claims, they said, caused them to take the long trip
[03:09.76]– in buses, on foot, and in trucks – to get to the Rio Grande River.
[03:18.00]Biden has said he wants to follow a more humane immigration policy
[03:23.96]than the policies of former president Donald Trump.
[03:29.64]Biden has begun to let in children
[03:32.92]who are not traveling with a parent or guardian.
[03:38.16]But he has kept in place Trump’s public health order
[03:43.28]that closes the border to almost all asylum seekers.
[03:49.92]Some families with young children
[03:52.40]are also being let into the United States.
[03:57.24]That is partly because one Mexican border state,
[04:01.80]Tamaulipas, would not accept their return.
[04:07.56]However, Biden administration officials
[04:10.68]have urged migrants not to make the dangerous trip north.
[04:16.44]They explain that the border is not open
[04:20.08]and that most people crossing the border illegally will be sent back.
[04:27.16]Keiby is a 17-year-old woman from Honduras.
[04:33.64]She was the first among Mayra’s group to arrive at the border wall.
[04:40.56]There was an open gate with no patrol agents,
[04:44.56]so she walked through and sat down to rest.
[04:49.68]She had heard she could be sent to a shelter for a few weeks
[04:55.04]before rejoining her family in the United States.
[05:00.44]She was excited to reunite with her mother,
[05:04.16]whom she had not seen for 14 years.
[05:09.20]“Now it’s finally real” she said. “Thank God.”
[05:14.68]Members of the U.S. military arrived
[05:17.92]in a truck and offered water to the migrants.
[05:22.84]A border patrol truck also arrived and agents stepped out.
[05:29.36]Then more agents arrived,
[05:31.72]separating the unaccompanied children,
[05:35.00]mostly teens, from those traveling as families.
[05:40.84]The border patrol agents lined up the minors
[05:44.52]likely to be traveling without adult guardians
[05:48.08]against large vehicles.
[05:51.48]They sat the families against the wall.
[05:55.20]Mayra stood at the end of the line of minors.
[06:01.72]Worried and crying,
[06:04.04]she fed Marvin and waited for border patrol agents.
[06:09.72]She said she has family members in New York
[06:13.12]and would like to start a life there in order to provide for her child.
[06:19.80]She also wants to send money
[06:22.68]back to her mother in Guatemala to buy medicine.
[06:28.20]“I hope they’ll let me go to my sister,” she said.
[06:33.12]I’m Alice Bryant.
[06:35.04]And I’m Jill Robbins. 更多听力请访问21VOA.COM
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
