[00:13.20]Many are children who do not have a parent with them. [00:18.40]Democratic Party members in the U.S. House of Representatives [00:23.20]say they are "trying to fix a broken system" [00:27.44]left behind by the administration of former President Donald Trump. [00:34.48]The leaders of the Republican Party in the House say [00:38.72]President Joe Biden's administration created a new crisis. [00:45.16]Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the House of Representatives [00:50.48]called what is going on "a Biden border crisis." [00:56.36]The Biden administration wants to call what is going on "a challenge." [01:02.96]Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, [01:07.72]said it is a "humanitarian crisis." [01:12.60]Even Trump is talking about it, saying Biden's administration [01:17.64]was "recklessly eliminating our border." [01:22.32]Jen Psaki, Biden's press secretary, said Republicans who say Biden [01:29.12]opened the border were "absolutely incorrect." [01:35.48]However, Roberta Jacobson, who works in the White House, said [01:42.08]many people may now be trying to get into the U.S. after Biden took office. [01:48.88]She said they think a more "humane" policy [01:53.40]is in place now that Trump is no longer president. [01:58.60]She also noted that people who smuggle migrants into the U.S. [02:04.60]may have been giving people false information. [02:09.36]The Biden administration stopped the building of a border wall [02:14.88]which Trump started during his presidency. [02:19.44]However, some policies [02:22.20]from the Trump administration have stayed in place. [02:27.40]The U.S. continues to prevent some people from coming into the country [02:33.72]because of the COVID-19 health crisis. [02:38.12]Alejandro Mayorkas is the Homeland Security secretary. [02:44.80]On Tuesday, he said that children coming into the U.S. are "vulnerable" [02:51.56]and the U.S. has ended a policy of sending them back. [02:58.32]The number of children trying to cross the border without adults [03:03.32]increased by 60 percent from January to February. [03:09.24]More than 9,400 tried to enter the United States last month. [03:16.88]U.S. Customs and Border Protection supervises security at the border. [03:24.96]It dealt with 100,000 people, mostly adults, in February. [03:32.44]The last time the number was that high was in June 2019. [03:39.60]While the U.S. is still sending adults and families home, [03:44.96]children under the age of 18 [03:47.40]who come by themselves are permitted to stay. [03:52.52]The U.S. is considering whether they should be offered asylum [03:57.08]or another reason to remain. [04:00.72]Mayorkas said the majority of the children [04:04.40]who are coming to the border [04:06.32]have a relative or parent in the U.S. [04:12.48]Biden's administration is working with FEMA, [04:16.20]the Federal Emergency Management Agency, [04:19.96]to set up temporary places for migrant children to live [04:25.12]in both Texas and Arizona. [04:29.12]It is also working with the Central American countries of Honduras, [04:34.12]Guatemala and El Salvador [04:37.24]to make more shelters available south of the U.S. border [04:42.16]and slow down the number of people who want to come north. [04:48.04]Mayorkas said his agency is working hard [04:52.40]but called the situation "a difficult one." [04:56.32]I'm Dan Friedell. [04:58.68]更多听力请访问21VOA.COM
