[00:09.28]The honorees included actor George Clooney, singer Amy Grant,
[00:15.28]composer Tania Leon, singer Gladys Knight and Irish rock group U2.
[00:23.56]A ceremony celebrating the artists was held
[00:27.64]at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
[00:33.72]The event just entered its 45th year.
[00:38.88]U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President
[00:43.16]Kamala Harris attended the gathering,
[00:46.52]along with cabinet members and leaders from Congress.
[00:51.28]Before the event, Biden personally praised the honorees
[00:56.52]at a reception at the White House.
[00:59.44]He recognized the performers for their individual abilities
[01:04.76]and said the group represented the spirit of the whole country.
[01:10.76]The show celebrated all the honorees' work,
[01:14.84]but none of them personally performed.
[01:18.36]Instead, other artists performed their works for the crowd.
[01:24.24]Actor and filmmaker Clooney told reporters
[01:29.40]he felt especially honored because he used to watch
[01:34.52]the Kennedy Center Honors show on television
[01:39.04]while growing up in a small Kentucky town.
[01:44.32]He remembered seeing people like Jimmy Stewart
[01:48.48]and Robert Redford receive the award.
[01:53.24]"That's an exciting fraternity to be a part of," Clooney said.
[01:59.28]Actors Julia Roberts and Matt Damon
[02:03.76]joined Clooney's father Nick, and others,
[02:07.84]on the Kennedy Center's stage to honor him.
[02:12.60]"George's best and most important work
[02:16.28]is still ahead of him," Clooney's father said.
[02:20.40]Six-time Grammy Award winner Grant
[02:24.36]told reporters before the event she felt honored to be chosen.
[02:29.60]But the singer added that she also felt "a debt of gratitude"
[02:35.68]for all the people who have worked together with her
[02:39.52]over the past 40 years.
[02:42.12]"Everything takes a village," Grant said.
[02:46.08]Singers Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, CeCe Winans
[02:51.80]and BeBe Winans were among the artists
[02:54.84]who celebrated Grant with a selection of her songs.
[03:00.48]Knight, who has won seven Grammy Awards,
[03:04.76]is famous for hits including I Heard It Through the Grapevine
[03:10.08]and Midnight Train to Georgia.
[03:13.32]She started out as the lead singer of The Pips,
[03:18.52]which became Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1962.
[03:25.24]Rapper and actor LL Cool J said Knight "
[03:31.08]connects with you on a deeper, spiritual level."
[03:35.48]Singers including Garth Brooks and Patti LaBelle
[03:40.96]performed some of Knight's songs.
[03:44.72]Cuban-born León is a conductor as well as a composer.
[03:51.76]Her orchestral piece Stride won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music.
[04:01.16]Composer and opera singer Alicia Hall Moran
[04:05.72]said León's pieces represent "moments in time,
[04:10.88]inspired by art and history and nature."
[04:16.60]She and her husband Jason Moran,
[04:20.04]along with cellist Sterling Elliott,
[04:23.80]performed León's work Oh Yemanja.
[04:28.24]The final tribute of the evening went to the Irish band U2.
[04:34.04]The group – with members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton
[04:39.28]and Larry Mullen Jr. – has won 22 Grammy Awards.
[04:44.68]U2 was selected in 2005
[04:48.64]for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
[04:53.40]In a pre-recorded video, U2 guitarist The Edge
[04:58.12]noted that a group of four "Irish lads"
[05:02.24]were being honored for contributions to American culture.
[05:06.88]He noted that there is a strong connection
[05:10.68]between the group and America
[05:13.56]that cannot really be explained.
[05:16.72]Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder sang U2's Elevation and One.
[05:23.28]Comedy actor Sacha Baron Cohen
[05:26.08]brought his movie character Borat to the stage
[05:29.64]as part of the U2 tribute.

[05:37.80]and Ukrainian singer Jamala closed out the show
[05:42.20]with an emotional version of U2's Walk On.
[05:46.88]The Kennedy Center Honors show will be broadcast
[05:51.44]on the American television network CBS on December 28.

END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
