[00:02.84]were working in their New Zealand garden in late August.
[00:07.28]They were removing unwanted plants
[00:10.68]when they found something strange.
[00:14.72]After a little digging, Colin discovered
[00:18.08]there was a very large potato growing in his garden.
[00:22.80]And they did not even plant potatoes!
[00:26.36]How large was the potato?
[00:30.16]"We couldn't believe it," Donna said. "It was just huge."
[00:37.00]The couple worked the potato out of the soil
[00:40.16]and brought it to a scale.
[00:42.88]It weighed almost 8 kilograms.
[00:46.28]That's about the same as a small dog.
[00:51.40]The potato may be the largest ever recorded.
[00:56.36]Guinness keeps a list of world records.
[01:00.04]In 2011, a large potato from Great Britain
[01:04.44]weighed just under 5 kilograms.
[01:09.36]The New Zealand potato, now named Doug,

[01:17.24]The Craig-Browns asked Guinness
[01:20.60]to recognize their potato as the largest ever.
[01:24.88]They are waiting to hear back from the organization.
[01:29.60]The potato has become famous in the town of Hamilton.
[01:33.16]Colin built a small cart
[01:36.36]to take Doug on walks around the neighborhood.
[01:40.36]"We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook,
[01:44.12]taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine," Doug said.
[01:49.36]"It's all a bit of fun. It's amazing what entertains people."
[01:55.68]Colin said he does not have any special gardening methods to pass on.
[02:01.64]Normally, he and his wife fertilize their garden
[02:05.68]with waste from cows and dried grasses.

[02:15.08]in that part of the garden,
[02:16.96]so they were surprised to find a potato.

[02:25.72]The potato is getting a little old now,

[02:35.28]Right now, it is in the freezer.
