[00:11.28]More than half of the seven positions will be filled by women of color. [00:17.84]The choices are part of Biden's effort to create an administration that, [00:23.68]in his words, "actually looks like America." [00:28.32]Biden's campaign communications director, Kate Bedingfield, [00:33.12]will serve as the White House communications director. [00:37.16]She served in a similar position for Biden when he was vice president [00:42.60]during the administration of President Barack Obama. [00:47.60]Jen Psaki will serve as his press secretary. [00:51.88]She held several positions in communications during Obama's administration, [00:58.04]including as State Department spokesperson. [01:02.92]Biden's communication team is expected to return to more [01:07.44]traditional ways of talking and meeting with members of the press. [01:13.56]President Donald Trump and his administration's communication team [01:19.12]have had an unusual relationship with the press. [01:23.36]His team has held comparatively few press briefings. [01:28.20]Those that did happen were often hostile. [01:33.12]Trump sometimes spoke directly to announcers of Fox News television programs [01:38.68]instead of reporters for the White House. [01:42.72]In a statement announcing the White House communications team, Biden said: [01:48.36]"Communicating directly and truthfully to the American people [01:52.84]is one of the most important duties of a President, [01:56.68]and this team will be entrusted with the tremendous responsibility [02:02.00]of connecting the American people to the White House." [02:07.04]Biden has also nominated women to several high-level positions in his Cabinet. [02:13.44]On Monday, the president-elect and his transition team announced [02:20.04]Janet Yellen as nominee for US Treasury Secretary. [02:24.24]If the Senate confirms her, Yellen will become the first woman ever [02:29.28]to lead the Treasury Department. [02:32.52]Last week, Biden named Linda Thomas-Greenfield as [02:36.72]U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. [02:40.40]Thomas-Greenfield, a Black woman, [02:43.52]served as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa [02:48.08]from 2013 to 2017 under Obama. [02:53.16]Biden has also nominated Avril Haines as Director of National Intelligence; [02:59.12]Neera Tanden as Director of the Office of Management and Budget; [03:04.20]and Cecelia Rouse as chair of Council of Economic Advisors. [03:10.40]As a presidential candidate, [03:12.88]Biden promised that people chosen for his administration [03:17.16]would represent the diversity, or mix, of the American public. [03:23.20]In an opinion article published last summer, [03:26.56]as protests spread nationwide over the police killings of Black people, [03:32.56]Biden wrote: "Across the board -- from our classrooms to our courtrooms [03:38.56]to the president's Cabinet -- we have to make sure that our leadership [03:43.68]and our institutions actually look like America." [03:48.72]Biden also said over the summer that [03:51.32]he would choose a woman to serve as his vice president. [03:55.04]On August 11, he chose Senator Kamala Harris, a Black and Indian woman. [04:01.60]Harris is now set to become the country's first female vice president. [04:07.84]People of color make up almost half of Biden's transition team, [04:12.36]Forbes magazine reported last month. [04:15.64]Women make up a small majority of the team.
