[00:01.88]English learners can improve their pronunciation skills
[00:07.08]with training exercises used by singers.
[00:12.52]A smartphone with a camera can help, too.
[00:16.60]These suggestions come from Michael Berman.
[00:22.32]He works in the Reading, English as a Second Language (ESL)
[00:28.64]and Linguistics Department at Montgomery College
[00:32.93]in the American state of Maryland.
[00:36.48]Many students of a foreign language have trouble with word stress and intonation
[00:44.20]– raising and lowering the sound of your voice when you speak.
[00:50.80]Michael Berman believes that such problems are not
[00:55.16]as serious as some people might think.
[00:59.52]Up to a third of his students, he says,
[01:03.52]have increased their ability to be understood
[01:07.68]by using two simple actions: slowing down and speaking up.
[01:14.92]VOA Learning English's video series
[01:18.68]Let's Learn English tells about a situation
[01:23.04]that many English learners have probably experienced:
[01:28.64]Anna: So, what's wrong? You look sad.
[01:32.28]Pete: I don't have a job.
[01:34.68]Anna: Sorry, I can't hear you.
[01:37.18]Pete: I do not have a job.
[01:41.52]In the video, Anna asks Pete to repeat his sentence
[01:47.16]because she did not understand him.
[01:50.56]And like many English learners,
[01:54.08]pronouncing words correctly is not Pete's problem.
[01:58.72]The reason Anna does not understand Pete
[02:03.36]is because he is not speaking loudly.
[02:07.76]In Pete's case, he is not raising his voice
[02:12.24]because he is sad about not having a job.
[02:17.04]For some English learners, the problem of speaking softly
[02:22.52]is that the speaker appears to be showing weakness, says Berman.
[02:28.20]English learners may want to hide their mistakes by speaking quickly or softly.
[02:36.96]Or, Berman adds, they are bringing customs from their native language.
[02:43.60]Whatever the reason, the result is this:
[02:48.36]English learners might not be understandable to a native speaker.
[02:54.08]Berman says there are several different ways
[02:58.33]to successfully deal with these problems.
[03:02.80]The first is simple: focus on the speed and volume levels of one's voice.
[03:11.12]By thinking about slowing down and speaking louder,
[03:16.04]you can slowly change your speech over time.
[03:20.52]In addition to thinking about how you speak,
[03:24.72]you can also use strategies from the music industry.
[03:29.80]In voice training, Berman says,
[03:33.81]singers will often train by opening their mouth wider than they usually do.
[03:41.48]This enables them to get a better tone
[03:45.24]and a better pitch when they perform.
[03:49.16]Singers will often imagine their voice coming up on a string
[03:55.24]to a target 3 to 5 meters away.
[04:00.56]When English learners imagine their voices hitting a target at a distance,
[04:06.88]Berman says, they often improve their ability to speak louder.
[04:13.96]In an earlier Education story,
[04:17.12]we discussed the value of self-testing.
[04:21.88]Educational consultant Sarah Lynn said
[04:25.64]that testing yourself often is one of the best ways to learn.
[04:32.24]Lynn teaches at Harvard University's Bridge Program in Massachusetts.
[04:39.28]So, how can you take this idea and use it to improve your pronunciation?
[04:47.44]One way is by taking a selfie video, says Michael Berman.
[04:52.92]All you need to do is place the electronic device 1-2 meters from where you stand.
[05:02.00]Then, record yourself speaking.
[05:06.04]When you listen back to the recording,
[05:09.20]you can get valuable information about how you sound when you speak.
[05:15.20]You can share the videos with friends or your teachers.
[05:20.72]They can give you advice, too.
[05:24.32]The value of this practice, adds Berman, increases
[05:29.64]because young people – often called "millennials
[05:34.08]– place a high value on the idea of posting videos on social media.
[05:41.16]When millennials know their video will appear on social media, he explains,
[05:47.44]they are likely to repeat the performance many times before filming.
[05:53.60]"If you're talking about English intelligibility issues,
[05:58.32]that kind of repetition and practice and focus is amazing", Berman says.
[06:06.72]So, give the vocal music and selfie video tips a try,
[06:13.12]and let us know how they work for you!
[06:16.72]I'm John Russell.
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
