[00:00.00]This is IN THE NEWS
[00:05.53]in VOA Special English.
[00:07.87]These days, Americans worry
[00:10.51]most about an economic recovery
[00:13.10]that President Obama calls
[00:15.48]"painfully slow."
[00:17.33]But on Saturday millions
[00:19.52]will remember the day
[00:21.17]al-Qaida terrorists flew airplanes
[00:24.10]into the World Trade Center
[00:27.18]in New York
[00:28.37]and the Pentagon in Washington.
[00:30.96]Another hijacked plane crashed
[00:34.10]in a field in Pennsylvania
[00:36.24]when passengers rebelled.
[00:38.52]Close to three thousand people
[00:41.26]died that day.
[00:43.25]Next year will be a big anniversary,
[00:46.54]ten years since the day
[00:48.58]Americans call 9-11.
[00:51.21]But this September eleventh
[00:53.66]comes at an uneasy time.
[00:55.70]A large number of Americans say
[00:58.79]they oppose plans to build
[01:01.43]an Islamic center
[01:02.87]near the World Trade Center site
[01:05.66]in New York.
[01:06.90]This week attention centered
[01:09.54]on a Christian minister
[01:11.13]with a small following
[01:12.92]in the state of Florida.
[01:14.71]Reverend Terry Jones said
[01:17.70]he would mark the 9-11 anniversary
[01:20.64]by burning copies of the Quran.
[01:23.92]He said he wanted to send
[01:26.86]a message to Islamic extremists.
[01:29.35]TERRY JONES: "We are not hateful
[01:31.09]toward Muslims.
[01:32.28]We are not aiming this at Muslims,
[01:37.27]we are aiming this at Sharia law."
[01:40.05]His church in Gainesville
[01:42.69]has maybe fifty members.
[01:44.38]On Thursday, Mr. Jones met with
[01:47.57]a local Islamic leader in Florida
[01:50.16] and agreed to cancel the burning.
[01:52.79]He said the decision was part
[01:55.58]of an agreement to move
[01:57.42]the proposed mosque in New York.
[02:00.46]But the imam leading that project
[02:03.59]denied any such agreement.
[02:06.23]In reaction, Mr. Jones said
[02:09.02]he was not canceling the burning,
[02:11.61]but was suspending it.
[02:13.99]Political and religious leaders
[02:16.68]around the world had condemned him.
[02:19.77]The plan even led the State Department
[02:22.95]to warn American travelers
[02:24.99]to avoid places
[02:27.13]where protests might take place.
[02:29.92]President Obama said burning Qurans
[02:33.70]could endanger American troops
[02:36.59]and invite more extremism.
[02:39.28]Defense Secretary Robert Gates
[02:42.16]called Mr. Jones on Thursday
[02:44.41]to urge him to reconsider.
[02:47.25]Administration officials called
[02:50.23]the idea of burning Qurans
[02:52.92]"un-American."
[02:54.33]But they also agreed that
[02:57.16]it would be within
[02:58.42]constitutional rights,
[03:00.17]like protesters who burn American flags.
[03:03.36]The Constitution guarantees free speech
[03:07.54]and bars the government
[03:09.63]from restricting the practice of religion.
[03:12.97]President Obama has worked to improve
[03:16.35]relations with the Islamic world.
[03:19.59]On Thursday he extended greetings
[03:22.77]to the world's Muslims for Eid al-Fitr,
[03:26.30]the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
[03:29.25]But many Muslim groups in the United States
[03:33.73]are limiting celebrations on Saturday
[03:36.81]because of the timing of Eid
[03:39.30]and 9-11 this year.
[03:41.99]A Muslim student leader
[03:44.48]at George Washington University,
[03:46.37]for example, called on
[03:48.51]Muslim students to take part in
[03:51.10]a day of community service.
[03:53.39]On Friday, a new study said
[03:57.42]national security agencies
[03:59.91]have not changed enough to deal
[04:03.05]with new terrorist threats
[04:05.00]against the United States.
[04:07.74]Experts warned of a growing threat
[04:11.07]from Americans going to other countries
[04:13.71]to train and work with terrorists.
[04:17.39]At least forty-three American citizens
[04:21.43]or residents linked to militant groups
[04:24.77]were charged with or convicted
[04:27.80]of terrorism crimes last year.
[04:30.39]These cases were in the United States
[04:33.43]and other countries,
[04:35.22]and were the most since 9-11.
[04:38.85]The two former chairmen
[04:41.14]of the 9-11 Commission that
[04:43.63]investigated the attacks led the study.
[04:46.67]And that's IN THE NEWS
[04:48.96]in VOA Special English.
[04:51.84]I'm Steve Ember.
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA¾©Ïã2018ÏÂÔØ
