[00:09.37]In Egypt, Islamist parties held protests Friday [00:14.45]against the military ouster of President Mohamed Morsi [00:19.83]and the arrest of leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. [00:24.16]The protests followed afternoon prayers across the country. [00:29.30]Mr. Morsi was forced out Wednesday following huge protests [00:35.28]by those opposed to his Islamist policies. [00:40.21]Military leaders replaced him with top judge Adly Mansour. [00:46.73]The temporary president was sworn in Thursday. [00:50.87]The Muslim Brotherhood quickly denounced the move. [00:55.40]Mr. Mansour called for the Muslim Brotherhood to continue [01:00.27]to take part in the political process. [01:03.87]Islam Abdel-Rahman is on the foreign affairs committee of [01:09.69]the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. [01:13.88]He told VOA that his group will not take part [01:18.82]in any political process led by Egypt's military. [01:24.35]Mr. Abdel-Rahman said the Brotherhood still considers [01:29.23]Mr. Morsi the rightful president of Egypt. [01:33.86]He says his group is calling for peaceful protests against his ouster. [01:41.14]"We fully believe in peaceful means of defying this military coup. [01:46.43]Actually, we don't believe in taking [up] arms or something like this. [01:50.37]We still believe that this country [01:52.16]can be managed by peaceful political means." [01:56.73]The military ouster of Egypt's first democratically elected president [02:02.25]came one year after he took office. [02:06.09]The military also suspended the constitution, [02:10.47]saying the action was necessary [02:13.66]because of the risk of a general rebellion. [02:17.90]At least three supporters of the ousted president [02:22.49]were killed by gunfire Friday. [02:25.72]The deaths came as a crowd tried to march to the military housing [02:31.99]where the ousted president is believed to be held. [02:36.48]A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood Freedom and Justice Party said [02:42.61]soldiers shot and killed the protesters. [02:46.29]Egyptian soldiers denied that they had used deadly weapons [02:52.38]against the protesters. [02:54.81]Also Friday, witnesses say soldiers opened fire on pro-Morsi protesters [03:02.99]who were trying to march on the defense ministry headquarters. [03:07.62]Also in Cairo, thousands of Morsi supporters [03:12.75]gathered in the Nasr City neighborhood. [03:16.63]They denounced the military intervention and demanded [03:21.17]that Egypt's first democratically elected president be returned to power. [03:27.75]Early Friday, security officials said people they called "Islamist gunmen" [03:35.47]attacked military and police checkpoints in the northern Sinai area. [03:42.50]The attacks killed an Egyptian soldier and wounded at least two others. [03:50.31]Egypt's military declared emergency conditions in Suez [03:56.99]and Sinai ahead of the planned Islamist protests. [04:01.62]The military and Egypt's former opposition groups [04:06.91]have called for understanding and compromise [04:10.99]as the military moves to restore democratic, civilian rule in Egypt. [04:18.37]The military is also denying any campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood. [04:25.35]But as of early Friday, prosecutors had ordered [04:30.47]the arrest of 300 of the group's members [04:34.01]and detained some of its top leaders. [04:37.65]The military has suspended the country's [04:41.79]Islamist-backed constitution and dissolved the parliament.
