[00:00.00]This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English.
[00:08.67]This week, President Obama
[00:11.02]gave his State of the Union speech,
[00:13.81]the last one before he seeks re-election in November.
[00:17.95]BARACK OBAMA: "Tonight I want to speak about how we move forward
[00:21.14]and lay out a blueprintfor an economy
[00:23.87]that is built to last-- an economy built on American manufacturing,
[00:27.28]American energy, skills for American workers
[00:31.80]and a renewal of American values."
[00:34.57]Tuesday night, Mr. Obama told Congress
[00:37.98]and the nation that "the renewal of American leadership
[00:41.90]can be felt across the globe."
[00:44.23]BARACK OBAMA: "Anyone who tells you
[00:45.47]that America is in decline or that our influence has waned,
[00:48.97]does not know what they are talking about."
[00:50.87]He also talked about what he called
[00:53.81]"the defining issue of our time."
[00:56.64]BARACK OBAMA: "We can either settle for a country
[00:58.59]where a shrinking number of people do really well,
[01:00.88]while a growing number of Americans barely get by.
[01:03.88]Or we can restore an economy
[01:07.19]where everyone gets a fair shot
[01:09.52]and everyone does their fair share
[01:11.83]and everyone plays by the same set of rules."
[01:14.68]On foreign policy issues, he noted that
[01:18.64]for the first time since two thousand three,
[01:21.54]no Americans are fighting in Iraq.
[01:25.01]He spoke about progress in Afghanistan,
[01:28.33]where American troops are beginning to withdraw.
[01:31.88]He also discussed the killing of Osama bin Laden
[01:36.87]and the "wave of change" across the Middle East and North Africa.
[01:42.41]He noted that today, in Libya, Moammar Gadhafi "is gone."
[01:47.85]BARACK OBAMA: "And in Syria, I have no doubt
[01:49.85]that the Assad regime will soon discover
[01:52.05]that the forces of change cannot be reversed,
[01:54.77]and that human dignity cannot be denied."
[01:56.97]The president said American-led international pressure
[02:02.59]on Iran is having an effect.
[02:05.41]He said he "will take no options off the table"
[02:09.63]to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
[02:13.72]BARACK OBAMA: "But a peaceful resolution of this issue
[02:15.99]is still possible, and far better.
[02:18.04]And if Iran changes course and meets its obligations,
[02:22.77]it can rejoin the community of nations."
[02:25.04]President Obama did not talk about issues
[02:27.73]such as North Korea, Middle East peace efforts
[02:31.45]or the European debt crisis.
[02:33.94]Daniel Serwer at the Johns Hopkins University School
[02:39.45]of Advanced International Studies in Washington
[02:42.26]says that was because of the election campaign.
[02:46.10]DANIEL SERWER: "It seems to me very significant
[02:48.27]that a lot was left out and that the president
[02:51.09]is trying to refocus away from broad international commitments
[02:55.81]and toward some very specific, mostly domestic commitments."
[03:00.03]The president did talk about China's trade policies.
[03:04.18]He announced plans to create a Trade Enforcement Unit
[03:08.99]to investigate reports of unfair trade practices.
[03:12.99]Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana
[03:16.14]gave the Republican Party reaction
[03:18.68]to the State of the Union speech.
[03:21.15]He called Mr. Obama's policies extreme and "pro-poverty."
[03:26.80]MITCH DANIELS: "No feature of the Obama presidency
[03:29.29]has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us,
[03:32.23]to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others.
[03:36.21]As in previous moments of national danger,
[03:39.67]we Americans are all in the same boat."
[03:41.74]The day after his speech, the president
[03:44.97]began a three-day trip to five states across the country.
[03:50.01]The states were Iowa, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Michigan.
[03:56.73]All are considered political "swing states,"
[04:00.71]which could help decide the election.
[04:03.28]In the Nevada, for example,
[04:06.19]the president discussed his proposals
[04:08.51]for increasing American energy development
[04:12.17]while protecting the environment.
[04:15.33]Republicans denounced his recent rejection of a proposed pipeline
[04:21.26]to move natural gas from Canadian tar sand fields to Texas.
[04:28.11]The four remaining candidates
[04:30.97]for the Republican nomination
[04:33.13]debated in Florida Thursday night.
[04:36.02]It was their last debate before that big southern state
[04:41.15]holds its primary election on Tuesday.
[04:44.67]And that's IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English.
[04:49.92]I'm Steve Ember.
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA¾©Ïã2018ÏÂÔØ
