[00:03.44]that recognizes faces and tells people if a stranger has entered their home.
[00:11.36]Many homes now have security cameras
[00:14.84]that tell owners if someone has entered.
[00:18.56]But the cameras do not know if the person is a family member,
[00:23.24]friend, delivery person or a criminal.
[00:28.23]But a new camera made by a company named Netatmo
[00:33.00]has facial recognition software that can tell parents at work
[00:38.84]that their children have returned from school,
[00:42.72]or that a package has been delivered to their home.
[00:47.16]It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.
[00:52.52]Janina Mattausch is a product marketing manager for Netatmo.
[00:58.12]"Current security cameras are not that smart.
[01:01.16]So, they can tell you if something is moving but they don't necessarily know if it's a human being or, ah,
[01:06.12]if it's your kids -- they don't know the difference, so they will alert you all the time."
[01:10.52]When family members enter a home,
[01:13.48]the smart camera "recognizes" them and sends information to the owner's smartphone.
[01:22.24]The owner can choose to see the video then or later.
[01:28.08]But if an unknown person enters a home,
[01:31.80]the camera will send the owner an alert
[01:35.24]that will cause an alarm to sound on the owner's smartphone.
[01:40.76]That is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Damien.
[01:47.96]He lives in Paris.
[01:50.00]"On a Friday I was at work, attending a big monthly meeting
[01:54.44]when my phone vibrated. At first I told myself ‘Oh, it must be a wrong alert, maybe I have to do some adjustments'
[02:00.44]-- but the notification on my phone was telling me that there was a movement in my flat
[02:04.68]and also a face that the app did not recognize."
[02:08.04]He watched the video and was very surprised by what he saw.
[02:13.64]"I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on,
[02:17.76]which is totally forbidden in my apartment. I was watching it live on video.
[02:21.92]So I felt totally frozen, stupefied.
[02:24.92]I asked a colleague to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way."
[02:30.20]Damien showed the video of the intruder to the police.
[02:34.96]The criminal was found later that day.
[02:38.72]He was sentenced to nine months in jail.
