[00:00.20]Social entrepreneurs – people who create start-up companies
[00:04.28]that would help the environment, health care or agriculture – are on the rise.
[00:10.00]These entrepreneurs use innovation
[00:12.84]to tackle important economic and social problems.
[00:16.52]They can be for-profit or non-profit entities.
[00:20.45]Funding for social entrepreneurs is increasing.
[00:24.12]This is coming from foundations, institutional investors and individuals.
[00:31.33]Kiplinger is a personal finance publication in Washington, D.C.
[00:37.85]It reported that the amount of assets in socially responsible investing
[00:43.36]– focused on companies doing good in the world – almost doubled,
[00:48.08]from $3.74 trillion in 2012 to $6.57 trillion in 2014.
[00:57.12]Globally, interest in socially responsible investing is growing even faster.
[01:03.04]The 2014 Global Sustainable Investment Review
[01:07.44]said that between 2012 and 2014,
[01:11.48]global assets rose to $21.4 trillion from $13.3 trillion
[01:19.31]– an increase of 61 percent.
[01:22.23]The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship,
[01:25.68]in Geneva, Switzerland, is an example
[01:28.92]of a foundation that advances social entrepreneurs around the world.
[01:33.70]Each year, working with the World Economic Forum,
[01:38.11]the foundation searches the globe "for outstanding social innovators,
[01:43.47]with business models that are proven to drive social
[01:47.24]and environmental change," said their website.
[01:50.69]Getting rich is not the primary aim of social entrepreneurs.
[01:55.66]Instead, their focus is on fulfilling their mission to improve society.
[02:01.34]"While profits are ideally generated,
[02:04.12]the main aim is not to maximize financial returns for shareholders,
[02:09.08]but to grow the social venture and reach more people in need,"
[02:13.66]said the Schwab Foundation website.
[02:16.40]Usually, social entrepreneurs reinvest their profits in the enterprise to expand it.
[02:23.45]Kristin Groos Richmond is co-founder of Revolution Foods
[02:28.84]and one of the social entrepreneurs selected by the Schwab Foundation.
[02:33.41]Her company, in Oakland, California,
[02:36.32]is dedicated to providing fresh food, prepared daily, for families and schools,
[02:42.46]and is active in 11 states across the U.S. and Washington, DC.
[02:47.60]Richmond said social entrepreneurs are driven by their values.
[02:52.28]She gave the following advice to aspiring social entrepreneurs:
[02:57.24]"Align yourself with a team, a board and investors who believe in your mission."
[03:03.12]Many social entrepreneurs create novel solutions to solve world problems.
[03:09.04]Bart Weetjens, a Belgian social entrepreneur, is an example.
[03:14.64]He kept rats a childhood pets,
[03:16.96]then realized they could be put to work detecting land mines.
[03:21.18]He founded the non-profit organization APOPO in 1997.
[03:26.92]APOPO has used specially trained rats on leashes
[03:31.24]to clear more than 13,200 unexploded bombs
[03:36.44]from minefields in Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola and Cambodia,
[03:42.80]according to the National Geographic.
[03:45.00]APOPO uses African giant-pouched rats,
[03:48.59]which are huge, cat-sized rats native to central Africa.
[03:53.17]They have "an extraordinary sense of smell," said the National Geographic.
[03:58.07]The rats are lightweight enough to walk across the mines without setting them off.
[04:03.92]And their sensitive noses can sniff out explosives buried in the ground,
[04:09.60]even decades after a war has ended.
[04:12.60]In addition, many business schools – both in the U.S. and other countries
[04:18.72]– now offer courses in social entrepreneurship.
[04:22.80]The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania is an example.
[04:28.37]It is ranked by US News & World Report
[04:31.84]as one of the nation's top business schools.
[04:34.78]Wharton Online offers a five-week class on social entrepreneurship,
[04:40.12]four to six hours a week, through Coursera, a global e-learning platform.
[04:46.28]Graduates of the course receive a certificate
[04:49.54]and "learn how to develop, test and deploy
[04:53.02]high-impact solutions to society's toughest problems,"
[04:57.28]according to Coursera's website.
[04:59.67]Social entrepreneurs have also won increased media attention.
[05:04.24]For example, Forbes showcased "30 Under 30"
[05:09.08]– the top social entrepreneurs younger than 30 from around the world.
[05:14.53]One honoree, Sejal Hathi, age 25,
[05:19.44]was a molecular biology student at Yale,
[05:22.56]who sought to help girls globally.
[05:25.24]She founded Girltank (www.girltank.org), a for-profit start-up,
[05:29.09]to identify and develop girls with potential to be high-impact leaders.
[05:35.36]The website refers to it as "the she lab for social entrepreneurship." "
[05:41.12]Girltank creates a virtual tank
[05:43.72]for young women interested in social entrepreneurship
[05:47.04]to utilize the collective genius of the group to brainstorm ideas and solutions,
[05:52.67]crowd-sourcing funding for their ventures,
[05:55.64]and receive peer-to-peer mentoring," according to the website.
[06:00.19]I'm Mary Gotschall.
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
