[ti:Teenage ‘Newton’ Builds Electric Device to Light Gaza Tent] [by:www.21voa.com] [00:00.00]更多听力请访问21VOA.COM [00:01.01]A 15-year-old boy in Gaza [00:03.39]was able to build a device to provide electricity [00:08.35]to light the tent he is staying in with his family. [00:13.64]Hussam Al-Attar got two fans at a resale market [00:19.21]and used them to create small wind turbines [00:23.89]to produce electricity. [00:26.32]His invention led others in the camp [00:29.70]where he stays to start calling him the "Newton" of Gaza. [00:35.12]This comparison involves the English scientist, Isaac Newton. [00:41.48]Newton is known for his major scientific discoveries [00:46.54]in the fields of physics, mathematics [00:50.58]and astronomy more than 300 years ago. [00:54.72]A famous story about Newton [00:57.87]describes how an apple falling on his head [01:01.75]led him to discover the nature of gravity. [01:06.46]"Newton was sitting under an apple tree [01:09.79]when an apple fell on his head [01:12.75]and he discovered gravity," Al-Attar told Reuters news agency. [01:19.57]"And we here are living in darkness and tragedy, [01:24.15]and rockets are falling on us, [01:26.80]therefore I thought of creating light, and did so," he added. [01:32.81]Al-Attar is staying with his family in a tent in Rafah, [01:38.42]a city on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, [01:42.57]near the border with Egypt. [01:44.87]Reuters reported that Rafah currently holds more than [01:49.80]half of Gaza's total population of 2.3 million people. [01:56.74]Large numbers of people fled to the area [02:00.73]from other parts of Gaza to escape fighting [02:04.73]between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters. [02:09.87]The fighting has been ongoing since Hamas militants [02:14.78]invaded southern Israel from Gaza on October 7. [02:20.82]Israeli officials say the invasion [02:24.47]left 1,200 people dead and 253 kidnapped. [02:31.99]Israel immediately began a large military campaign [02:37.34]to answer the actions of Hamas. [02:40.66]Israeli military officials have said their goal [02:45.25]is to crush the Palestinian Islamist group. [02:49.63]Local health officials in Gaza say the fighting [02:54.17]has killed more than 27,000 people [02:57.97]across the territory and caused displacement and hunger. [03:03.12]Al-Attar and his family are staying in a tent [03:07.77]that is partly attached to a house. [03:11.48]He was able to climb onto the roof [03:14.09]to set up two fans, one above the other. [03:18.52]The wind can turn the fans, [03:20.97]which produce small amounts of electricity. [03:24.84]He then connected the fans to wires [03:27.99]and built a charging station. [03:30.89]Al-Attar also built switches [03:34.40]to control a lighting system made out of wood. [03:38.61]He said his first two attempts failed [03:42.31]and it took him a while to develop a working system. [03:47.11]"I started developing it further, bit by bit, [03:51.36]until I was able to extend the wires through the room [03:55.56]to the tent that we are living in, so that the tent will have light." [04:01.14]Al-Attar added that he was happy to be able [04:05.52]to create something to help "ease the suffering" of his family members. [04:11.78]He said he is looking forward to the future [04:14.96]when conditions can improve in Gaza. [04:19.3]"I am very happy that people in this camp [04:22.52]call me Gaza's Newton," Al-Attar said. [04:27.23]He added, "Because I hope to achieve my dream [04:31.00]of becoming a scientist like Newton [04:34.28]and creating an invention that will benefit [04:37.87]not only the people of the Gaza Strip, but the whole world."
