[00:49.40]"The Queen's Gambit" came out in the early part of 2020 [00:55.12]and told the fictional story of a young woman [00:59.28]who became a world chess champion. [01:03.32]It won two awards in the "outstanding limited series" category. [01:10.12]"Ted Lasso" won seven awards in the comedy category. [01:15.72]It tells the story of an American football coach [01:20.64]who is hired to run a soccer team in London. [01:26.64]The Emmy Awards started in the 1950s [01:30.92]to honor the best television programs. [01:34.88]At first, only major U.S. broadcasters won the awards. [01:40.68]Then, when cable television arrived in the 1980s, [01:47.16]programs made for channels that required payment, [01:51.08]or a subscription, started winning awards. [01:56.68]More recently, programs made for streaming video services, [02:01.64]such as Netflix, started winning. [02:05.32]Netflix won 44 awards, matching the record [02:09.80]set by U.S. broadcaster CBS in 1974. [02:16.36]"Mare of Easttown," a show on the cable channel HBO [02:21.68]with the actress Kate Winslet, [02:24.24]centers on a small-town police detective. [02:28.44]Winslet won an acting award [02:30.76]and the show won three more Emmys. [02:35.32]The big winners were television shows about women, [02:38.60]featuring female actors. [02:42.08]Peter Morgan is the creator and writer of "The Crown." [02:45.92]He said that the recent season, [02:49.12]which centered on Queen Elizabeth, [02:51.28]Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana, [02:56.60]and included actors Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson [03:00.80]and Emma Corrin, was easy to write. [03:05.40]"All three of those women are defining women [03:09.16]of the second-half of the 20th century. And so, [03:12.40]that just lifts everybody. [03:14.00]That lifts everybody when you've got characters [03:16.76]that strong, vivid and individual." [03:21.20]Josh O'Connor won a top acting award for "The Crown." [03:25.68]He plays Prince Charles. [03:28.08]Much of the season centers on the time [03:31.24]leading up to and including [03:33.76]the 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana. [03:39.36]Jason Sudeikis helped create "Ted Lasso" [03:43.48]and plays the main character. [03:46.04]It won the award for "outstanding comedy series." [03:50.44]Sudeikis won for "lead actor" [03:53.32]and his cast mates Hannah Waddingham [03:57.20]and Brett Goldstein won for their supporting roles. [04:01.96]Sudeikis said: [04:03.36]"this show's about families and mentors and teammates, [04:08.20]and I wouldn't be here without those things in my life." [04:12.88]The comedy actress winner was Jean Smart, [04:16.28]who plays a comedian concerned about the end of her career in "Hacks." [04:21.72]She said of her husband, actor Richard Gilliland, [04:26.08]who died six months earlier, "I would not be here without him." [04:32.32]Black comedian Cedric the Entertainer was host of the show. [04:37.76]But some observers were saddened [04:39.76]that more Black actors and writers did not win awards.
