[00:07.40]Now, the VOA Learning English program Words and Their Stories.
[00:13.51]On this program we discuss the meaning
[00:17.05]and usage of common expressions in American English.
[00:23.04]The world can be a cold, cold place.
[00:27.68]Sometimes the environment is figuratively cold,
[00:32.24]meaning not cold in temperature but rather cold in feeling.
[00:38.44]People can be mean.
[00:40.32]Work can be thankless.
[00:42.96]Living conditions can be hard.
[00:46.48]And sometimes the world is literally cold.
[00:51.01]Temperatures drop.
[00:53.18]Snow falls from the clouds and sticks to the ground.
[00:57.60]Ice covers sidewalks and roads.
[01:01.79]Bitterly cold wind stings your face.
[01:06.09]Whether your world feels literally or figuratively cold,
[01:12.69]our program today will give you the language to find comfort and warmth!
[01:20.20]First, let's talk about our first protection against the cold -- clothing.
[01:25.90]When the weather is cold, it is important to wear the right clothing.
[01:31.96]Warm clothes -- a good coat, hat, scarf, and gloves
[01:37.08]-- can make all the difference.
[01:40.08]In fact, I've read that Swedish people have this expression:
[01:44.28]"There is no bad weather only bad clothing."
[01:48.80]So, when it's cold outside, you need to bundle up!
[01:53.64]This phrasal verb means to dress warmly.
[01:57.60]Being underdressed in cold weather
[02:00.04]can be unpleasant or even dangerous.
[02:04.64]Parents often tell children to bundle up as advice.
[02:09.00]"Make sure to bundle up! It's really cold today."
[02:12.96]Babies bundled up in soft blankets
[02:15.72]are warm, protected and very cute!
[02:20.60]After a day out in the cold world,
[02:23.04]it feels good to come home and change out of your day clothes.
[02:28.64]Putting on something comfortable, like pajamas,
[02:32.24]can warm both the body and soul.
[02:37.36]When we use "comfortable" to describe things like clothing or furniture,
[02:42.68]we sometimes shorten it to just comfy.
[02:47.40]For example, "This sweater is so comfy!"
[02:51.56]or "Your couch is very comfy."
[02:56.12]Now, a simple pleasure on a cold, winter day
[02:59.48]is to sit close to a warm fire.
[03:03.56]If you are lucky enough to be sitting by a fire,
[03:06.76]wearing comfy clothes, and drinking a cup of hot chocolate,
[03:10.96]you could say comfy-cozy, toasty-roasty.
[03:16.04]This sounds like part of a children's song,
[03:19.16]but it is just a way of saying you are warm and comfortable.
[03:25.76]If you're really lucky, you have someone to cozy up with.
[03:30.56]To cozy up to someone means to get physically close to them.
[03:35.52]Another word for this is to snuggle.
[03:39.36]After a bad day, it can be warm and comforting
[03:43.76]to cozy up with a husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend,
[03:48.44]or even your loyal dog or cat.
[03:52.20]But this expression has another meaning.
[03:56.12]To cozy up to someone can mean to start a friendship with someone
[04:00.48]or simply be nice to them in an attempt to get something.
[04:05.64]In order to get something you want, you are nice and extra friendly.
[04:11.04]Let's hear it used in this example.
[04:13.60]A: Matthew has been so nice to me recently.
[04:17.04]It's strange. I didn't think he liked me.
[04:21.04]B: He heard that you will be deciding
[04:23.20]who goes overseas to work on that big project.
[04:26.73]So, he's cozying up to you.
[04:30.16]A: Oh. That explains the box of chocolates he gave me!
[04:34.84]So, people can cozy up to others
[04:37.36]to try to get something they want but so can industries.
[04:43.20]You may hear "cozy up" when talking about
[04:46.08]the attempt to influence government officials.
[04:50.20]For example, to get favorable laws passed,
[04:53.68]lobbyists may cozy up to lawmakers.
[04:58.04]Another way we say this is to get cozy (with someone.)
[05:03.04]You might hear it used this way.
[05:06.12]"I see you've been getting cozy with the coach lately.
[05:09.88]Worried about your position on the team, are you?"
[05:14.08]Now, even though big business and lawmakers
[05:17.64]often cozy up with each other,
[05:20.04]we would not describe either of them as warm-and-fuzzy.
[05:25.12]Sometimes this word combination is hyphenated.
[05:28.44]Sometimes it is not.
[05:31.16]Something that feels really good after escaping the cold
[05:35.32]is something warm-and-fuzzy.
[05:38.52]Fuzzy describes something very soft to the touch
[05:42.48]– like a puppy or a kitten.
[05:45.48]So, warm-and-fuzzy clothing can comfort you
[05:48.85]after dealing with literal cold.
[05:52.28]But something warm-and-fuzzy
[05:54.17]can also protect you against figurative cold.
[05:59.08]For example, a movie can be warm-and-fuzzy.
[06:03.48]This means it makes you feel good when you watch it.
[06:07.88]However, we also use this expression
[06:10.93]to describe someone or something that is really cold or unfeeling.
[06:17.24]As we said earlier,
[06:18.92]lobbyists and lawmakers usually aren't warm-and-fuzzy.
[06:24.76]Let's hear how it is used in another example:
[06:28.80]A: "Your roommate sure isn't the warm and fuzzy type, is she?"
[06:33.16]B: "No, she's not. Last week when I had a cold,
[06:37.52]she told me not to sneeze so loudly."
[06:40.52]A: "Now, that's cold."
[06:43.48]After a bad day -- either a cold or hot one
[06:47.16]-- many of us just want to get home and escape.
[06:51.56]My perfect way to escape would be change into my comfy-cozy pajamas,
[06:58.12]sink into my comfy couch and curl up in front of a fire
[07:03.24]to watch a warm-and-fuzzy movie.
[07:06.72]"To curl up" means to make your body into the shape
[07:10.02]of a ball to keep warm, as a kitten would.
[07:14.24]Is there anything cuter than a fuzzy, baby animal
[07:17.64]curling up by its mother? I don't think so.
[07:22.48]To escape a cold world, you may want to curl up with a cup of hot tea
[07:27.48]and our next Words and Their Stories.
[07:30.84]I'm Anna Matteo.
[07:34.28]After a bad day in the cold world,
[07:36.88]how do you find comfort?
[07:39.12]Practice using the language you heard here.
[07:41.96]Or practice using "cozy up" to write about people trying to get something they want.
[07:48.24]You can do both ... in the Comments Section.
[07:52.00]I'm Anna Matteo.
[07:53.72]Big old cups of steaming cider
[07:59.37]Fall asleep by a cozy fire
[08:03.78]It's the warm and fuzzy time of year
[08:12.12]It's the warm and fuzzy time of year
END OF TRACK. "END OF TRACK." The two men bowed. "Whoever was that person you were talking to?" she enquired, as soon as they stood together. The took of triumph faded from her eyes, she had grown worn and weary. The roses were wilting on the walls, the lights were mostly down now. Hetty, looking in to see if anything was wanted, found herself driven away almost fiercely. I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, The year 1747 was opened by measures of restriction. The House of Lords, offended at the publication of the proceedings of the trial of Lord Lovat, summoned the parties to their bar, committed them to prison, and refused to liberate them till they had pledged themselves not to repeat the offence, and had paid very heavy fees. The consequence of this was that the transactions of the Peers were almost entirely suppressed for nearly thirty years from this time, and we draw our knowledge of them chiefly from notes taken by Horace Walpole and Lord Chancellor Hardwicke. What is still more remarkable, the reports of the House of Commons, being taken by stealth, and on the merest sufferance, are of the most meagre kind, sometimes altogether wanting, and the speeches are given uniformly under fictitious names; for to have attributed to Pitt or Pelham their[112] speeches by name would have brought down on the printers the summary vengeance of the House. Many of the members complained bitterly of this breach of the privileges of Parliament, and of "being put into print by low fellows"; but Pelham had the sense to tolerate them, saying, "Let them alone; they make better speeches for us than we can make for ourselves." Altogether, the House of Commons exhibited the most deplorable aspect that can be conceived. The Ministry had pursued Walpole's system of buying up opponents by place, or pension, or secret service money, till there was no life left in the House. Ministers passed their measures without troubling themselves to say much in their behalf; and the opposition dwindled to Sir John Hinde Cotton, now dismissed from office, and a feeble remnant of Jacobites raised but miserable resistance. In vain the Prince of Wales and the secret instigations of Bolingbroke and Doddington stimulated the spirit of discontent; both Houses had degenerated into most silent and insignificant arenas of very commonplace business. "It certainly will be. Miss Widgeon," answered Maria, with strictly "company manners." "One who has never had a brother exposed to the constant dangers of army life can hardly understand how glad we all feel to have Si snatched from the very jaws of death and brung back to us." "Just plug at 'em as you would at a crow, and then go on your way whistlin'?" persisted Harry. "Hurroo!" echoed Hennessey; "that's the ticket." "Come forward, keeper," continued the baron, "and state how these arrows came into your hands!" "Yes." HoMEJULIA京香2018下载
